Temple Dining Hall & Booth Student Center Recognized with a 2014 Texas Society of Architects Design Award

awards + Temple Dining Hall + Booth Student Center

"A highly restrained and elegant project that successfully juxtaposes attenuated metal frames, stucco, concrete, and stone walls. Importantly, the architect maintained mastery of the tectonics throughout. The dining hall, in particular, was an elegant and light-filled space that deployed the steel frame to maximum effect. The project also successfully nestles into the existing campus plan while taking advantage of the topography and views."

"The interior spaces of the project are often intentionally small in proportion, offering a sense of cave-like intimacy. This is contrasted by deliberate moves to connect to the outdoors. The physical spaces open to showcase expansive views of Montana’s infinite sky and dramatic landscape. Each bedroom’s separate, screened-in space makes it possible to sleep in nature and yet be secure within the building. The wood and stone comprising the façade are each carried through to the interior of the project, further reinforcing the connection to the outdoors. Like the lake, the building feels as if it has been—and will be—there forever."

Collector’s House by Andersson-Wise, OEN Blog

press + Collector's House

"What I like about this house is the fact that they’ve kept it really clean and simple all the way throughout but have let the objects inside the house, obviously owned by a design collector, speak for themselves. For example the sculpture and the chair in the third picture from the top, absolutely exceptional and is really one of a kind. Also in the fifth image where they have a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona daybed and a classic handcrafted wooden table, it’s a place full of abstract angles and stunning light, just what I like to see!"

Stone Creek Camp, Weekend Cabin Series - Adventure-Journal.com

press + Stone Creek Camp

"There’s nothing small — or subtle — about Stone Creek Camp on Flathead Lake, Montana, but it’s plenty provocative. The project by Andersson-Wise architects turns the traditional inside out: It’s a log cabin in the sense that the walls are comprised of timber — cordwood cut from the Douglas fir and larch trees that were cleared from the site — but that’s where the cabinesque similarities end. Indeed, the main house is sculptural, whimsical (note the tufted roof), and even suburban (a sod lawn in the mountains?) — a mix of styles and cues that you will likely love…or not."

"The cabin stands delicately on a slope above Flathead Lake, Montana, steel legs tiptoed on small pillars of concrete. It’s a fitting posture, as this cabin is meant to be light on the land and light on the mind."

"It is, in fact, a 600-square-foot getaway from the owner’s main house, connected by walking path, and was designed not to shelter from Montana’s elements, but to embrace them. There’s no cooling or heat. Electric is minimal. The rooms are spare and open. “It is a protected porch,” says architect Arthur Andersson, “made like a piece of furniture."

A 200-foot wood-and-steel-cable suspension bridge begins a few hundred yards from the Martin home, swoops up over a hill and a creek, then meets a stone staircase that leads down to the shores of Lake Austin…

"This light-filled Austin home is notable first for its substantiality. Viewed from across the long, crushed-gravel entry drive, the wide structure with its butter-colored stucco walls, limestone sills and soft grey-green window trim appears to have been standing for at least a century. It projects the look of a European country house that might have gradually expanded over several generations…"
