"What I like about this house is the fact that they’ve kept it really clean and simple all the way throughout but have let the objects inside the house, obviously owned by a design collector, speak for themselves. For example the sculpture and the chair in the third picture from the top, absolutely exceptional and is really one of a kind. Also in the fifth image where they have a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona daybed and a classic handcrafted wooden table, it’s a place full of abstract angles and stunning light, just what I like to see!"

"There’s nothing small — or subtle — about Stone Creek Camp on Flathead Lake, Montana, but it’s plenty provocative. The project by Andersson-Wise architects turns the traditional inside out: It’s a log cabin in the sense that the walls are comprised of timber — cordwood cut from the Douglas fir and larch trees that were cleared from the site — but that’s where the cabinesque similarities end. Indeed, the main house is sculptural, whimsical (note the tufted roof), and even suburban (a sod lawn in the mountains?) — a mix of styles and cues that you will likely love…or not."

"The cabin stands delicately on a slope above Flathead Lake, Montana, steel legs tiptoed on small pillars of concrete. It’s a fitting posture, as this cabin is meant to be light on the land and light on the mind."

The University of Texas School of Architecture 2011 Student Architecture Award was presented to Andersson-Wise Architects for Block 21 and the W Hotel on Friday, Dec. 2. A student-led jury selected the project over two other finalists: the Arthouse at the Jones Center renovation by LTL Architects and Balcones House by Pollen Architecture & Design. The deciding factor in naming it the best building completed in the Austin area in the past year was "the complexity of the project and how well Andersson-Wise managed to accommodate every program of the building," says jury secretary Karl Gleason. Andersson•Wise Architects creates a sculptural lakeside refuge that balances the wild with the refined.

"The district, bordered by Colorado and San Antonio Streets, is chockablock with boutiques, coffeehouses, wine bars and design stores and is anchored by a mixed-use development across from City Hall. It contains is a 36-story W hotel and condo tower, which opened last December, and the state-of-the-art Moody Theater, the new home of the iconic PBS music series Austin City Limits..."

The W Hotel and Residences complex creates a bold centerpiece on the city's skyline and a new center of gravity for downtown.  The 37-story tower occupies a prime location framing City Hall and Lady Bird Lake. The multi-use project contains 12 floors for the W Hotel and 25 floors of W-branded luxury condominiums as well as Austin City Limits Live at Moody Theater, the new home for the venerable PBS television production. The 1 million square foot project is the largest LEED Silver Certified building in the American Southwest region, and the only one that is mixed-use.

The slender hotel and residential tower, positioned above a lower podium, reads like a work of minimalist art. Sheer exterior surfaces with highly reflective windows are precisely detailed to express volume and materials. Shadows and natural light animate the mix of mirror and matte finishes by reflecting and sometimes absorbing the color of the surrounding sky. Light hits these surfaces and shimmers from some angles and goes flat from others.

The tower's primary facades are oriented north-south, with differing apertures composed to control daylight, heat gain and energy use. On the south façade, generous, deeply-recessed balconies--inspired by the Hopi Indian cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde--create shaded, outdoor rooms in the summer and admit warm light in the winter. North-facing residences have walls that slide open to form porches. Projecting balconies shade the sun-drenched east and west sides of the tower. A restrained presence is a key component of the entire project.

From the gatehouses, a path leads down the hill to the master house, main lodge, and guesthouse. Inhabitants may choose to be outdoors while inside by sliding open walls or moving outside to spaces that are more civilized than the outlying wilderness. Similarly, with each bedroom’s separate screened-in space, it is always possible to sleep in nature and yet still be secure within the building..."
